What Does Running a Sauna Actually Cost? (2026 Calculator)

Direct answer: Running a home infrared sauna costs far less than most buyers expect: roughly $0.31 to $0.90 per one-hour session at the U.S. average residential electricity rate of about $0.17/kWh — and that's the worst case, computed as if the heaters ran at full rated power the entire hour, which they don't. Daily use lands around $9–$27 a month depending on the model. The math is simply watts × hours × your rate, and every number you need is below.

The 60-second version of the math

Every sauna's running cost comes from one formula: kilowatts × hours × your electricity rate. You can get the kilowatts from any spec sheet — and if a seller won't tell you the wattage, you can bound it yourself from the circuit:

  • Watts = volts × amps. A sauna on a 120V/15A household circuit physically cannot draw more than 120 × 15 = 1,800 watts. A 240V/30A circuit tops out at 7,200 watts. That circuit number is the ceiling — the most pessimistic possible figure.
  • Rated wattage is lower than the ceiling. Peak publishes actual rated wattage per model (table below) — for example, the Fuji 2-Person is rated 2,050W on a 120V/20A circuit, below the 2,400W the wiring allows.
  • Real sessions cost less than rated × time. Heaters cycle with the thermostat once the cabin reaches temperature, so a "full hour at full rated power" — the assumption in every figure on this page — deliberately overstates your bill. We'd rather you be pleasantly surprised.

Worked example: the Fuji 2-Person at 2,050W is 2.05 kW. One hour, including warm-up, at $0.17/kWh: 2.05 × 1 × 0.17 = about $0.35. Five sessions a week ≈ $7 a month.

120V vs 240V: what actually changes

Buyers often assume a 240V sauna costs "double" to run. It doesn't work that way — you pay for energy (kWh), not voltage. What changes:

  • Installation. Peak's 1-person models (Mini, Shasta, Rainier) run on a standard 120V/15A household outlet — no electrician. The 2-person models want a 120V/20A circuit. The 3-person-and-up and outdoor models need a dedicated 240V circuit, which typically means an electrician visit if you don't have one available.
  • Power budget. 240V circuits allow more watts, which is what heats a bigger cabin (and, outdoors, fights the weather). More watts per hour costs proportionally more per hour — the El Capitan's 5,300W costs about 2.6× the Fuji's 2,050W per hour — but it's also heating roughly triple the space.
  • Speed. A higher-wattage heater reaches session temperature faster, so some of the extra draw is repaid in shorter warm-up. That's part of why the flat "full hour at full power" assumption above overstates real bills.
  • Traditional saunas are a different league. Electric heaters for traditional steam rooms are commonly sized 6,000–8,000W for a family-size room — two to four times a typical infrared cabin — because they must heat air and rocks to much higher temperatures (Peak's outdoor infrared models, by comparison, are rated to 170°F). Electricity is the smallest line in sauna ownership. The honest way to think about total cost:

  • Purchase price dominates.
