Electrical requirements by model

This is the line on every Peak product page that matters most before you order. Here is the whole lineup in one table.

What "dedicated" means

A dedicated circuit is a breaker that feeds only the sauna. Nothing else shares it, so the sauna always has full power and never trips a breaker that a refrigerator or space heater is also using.

• 120V/15A standard outlet. The Mini, Shasta, Rainier, and Crown use an ordinary household outlet on a standard breaker. Plug in and start.
• 120V/20A dedicated outlet. The Fuji and Everest are rated for a 20-amp circuit. They use a NEMA 5-20 receptacle, which looks like a normal outlet with one horizontal slot, on its own 20-amp breaker. Many kitchens, garages, and laundry rooms already have one. If you do not, an electrician adds one. Ask for "a dedicated 20-amp, 120-volt circuit with a 5-20 receptacle."
• 240V/20A or 240V/30A dedicated circuit. The Denali, Matterhorn, Patagonia, Kilimanjaro, and El Capitan run on 240V, like an electric dryer. A licensed electrician installs a double-pole breaker on two separate phases and a matching receptacle (NEMA 6-20 indoors; locking L6-20 or L6-30 outdoors). If the two legs land on the same phase the sauna sees only 120V and will not heat properly, so ask the electrician to confirm 240V across both hot terminals with a meter.

Four rules that protect your sauna and your warranty

• Never use an extension cord on any model. The power cord is approximately 9 feet long; place the sauna so the outlet is within reach.
• Do not convert voltage. A 120V sauna cannot run on 240V and a 240V sauna cannot run on 120V. The wrong voltage damages the unit and voids the warranty.
• GFCI. Indoor models use a standard, non-GFCI outlet on a standard breaker. Outdoor models must not use a GFCI outlet either; where local code requires ground-fault protection, the electrician installs a GFCI breaker at the panel. Peak saunas do not have a built-in GFCI.
• Follow local code. The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) treats a sauna as fixed heating equipment on a dedicated circuit. Your electrician pulls any permit your municipality requires for a new 240V circuit. Your local building department can confirm which code edition applies.

Space, clearance, and floor

Exterior sizes are the assembled cabin. Bench sizes are approximate seat length by depth; the Kilimanjaro figure is its upper bench.

• Sides and back: 1 to 2 inches minimum, 3 to 6 inches recommended. Do not push the cabin flush against a wall; it needs airflow.
• Above: 4 to 6 inches for electrical access. Plan on 7 feet of ceiling height for an indoor cabin; 80 inches is the minimum.
• In front of the door: 18 to 24 inches so you can step in and out comfortably.
• Floor: a hard, level surface. Hardwood, tile, laminate, and concrete all work. Keep the cabin away from standing water.
• Garage or basement: fine. If the room falls below 65°F, the sauna takes longer to reach temperature.
• Measure the route, not just the spot. Check the width and depth of the footprint, the ceiling height, and every doorway and hallway between the delivery point and the room. Not sure it fits? Email your room dimensions to support@peaksaunas.com and the team will confirm.

Outdoor placement

The Patagonia, Kilimanjaro, and El Capitan are built for outdoor use and reach a true 170°F. Set them on a level, solid surface: a concrete pad, a deck, or pavers. Never place a sauna directly on grass, dirt, or gravel, because ground moisture wicks up into the wood. The electrical connection must be weatherproof and outdoor-rated, installed by a licensed electrician.

Delivery: what to expect

1. Freight, free, crated. Every Peak sauna ships free by freight carrier in a custom protective crate on a pallet.
2. The carrier schedules with you. A freight carrier calls or emails 1 to 3 days ahead to set up a delivery window.
3. Threshold delivery is standard. The driver brings the crate to your garage or front door, wherever a dolly can reach. Large outdoor models (Patagonia, Kilimanjaro, El Capitan) may be delivered curbside depending on the address and access. Peak does not offer room-of-choice placement or assembly with delivery.
4. Inspect before the driver leaves. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, photograph it, and accept the delivery. Email support@peaksaunas.com within 5 days with your order number; Peak files the freight claim and ships replacement parts at no cost.

Assembly: 45 to 90 minutes, two people

Peak saunas arrive as pre-built wall, floor, and roof panels with a pre-wired control panel and a glass door. The panels lock together with buckle clips. Most customers finish in 45 to 90 minutes. No contractor or special tools are required.

1. Lay out every piece and check for damage.
2. Position the floor panel where the sauna will live.
3. Clip the back panel to the floor.
4. Add the side panels one at a time.
5. Fit the front panel with the door opening.
6. Lower the roof panel onto the walls.
7. Secure every buckle clip and check that the cabin is stable.
8. Set the bench on its interior brackets.
9. Hang the glass door on the included hinges.
10. Plug in and test every function.

Which model fits the power you have?

• "I only have ordinary outlets and I do not want to call an electrician." Mini, Shasta, Rainier, or Crown. Plug and play on 120V/15A.
• "I have a 20-amp outlet where the sauna will go, or I will have an electrician add one." Fuji (cedar, Peak's best-seller) or Everest (hemlock) on a dedicated 120V/20A outlet.
• "I have a 240V circuit, or I am having one installed." Denali or Matterhorn indoors (240V/20A); Patagonia outdoors (240V/20A); Kilimanjaro or El Capitan outdoors (240V/30A).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrician to install an infrared sauna?

It depends on the model. No for the Mini, Shasta, Rainier, and Crown, which plug into a standard 120V/15A household outlet. Probably for the Fuji and Everest, which need a 120V/20A outlet on its own dedicated 20-amp breaker; most homes do not have one where the sauna will go, so plan on an electrician adding it. Yes for the 240V models: Denali, Matterhorn, Patagonia, Kilimanjaro, and El Capitan.

Can the Fuji or Everest plug into a regular outlet?

No. The Fuji and Everest need a dedicated 120V/20A outlet. It is the same 120V voltage as the rest of your house, but on its own 20-amp breaker with a NEMA 5-20 receptacle (one slot is horizontal). A standard 15-amp outlet is not sufficient.

Can I use an extension cord with my sauna?

No. Never run any Peak sauna on an extension cord. The power cord is approximately 9 feet long on every model, so plan the sauna's position with the outlet in reach.

Does an infrared sauna need a GFCI outlet?

Indoor models use a standard, non-GFCI outlet on a standard breaker; no GFCI is needed indoors. Outdoor models must not be plugged into a GFCI outlet either. If your local code requires ground-fault protection outdoors, a licensed electrician installs a GFCI breaker at the panel, not a GFCI outlet.

Can I convert a 240V sauna to 120V, or the reverse?

No. Peak saunas cannot be converted between 120V and 240V. Running a sauna on the wrong voltage damages it and voids the warranty. Choose the model that matches the circuit you have or are willing to add.

How long does assembly take?

Most customers assemble a Peak sauna in 45 to 90 minutes with two people. The wall, floor, and roof panels arrive pre-built and lock together with buckle clips. You need a Phillips screwdriver; a rubber mallet and a level are helpful but optional. No contractor is required. Can an indoor sauna go in a garage or basement?

Yes. A garage or basement with a hard, level floor and the right outlet works well. If the room drops below 65°F, expect a slower heat-up. Keep the sauna away from standing water and leave the clearances listed above.
