What Is "Red Light" in a Sauna, Actually?

Two products are sold under the same phrase, and telling them apart is most of the buying decision.

Chromotherapy lighting is a color-changing LED strip or recessed puck that cycles through red, blue, green and amber. Its purpose is mood. It isn't specified in wavelengths, publishes no irradiance, and none of the photobiomodulation literature applies to it.

Therapeutic red light — the field's real name is photobiomodulation, or PBM — is the delivery of specific red and near-infrared wavelengths at enough power density to produce a measurable biological response. Reviews describe the light being absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores, principally cytochrome c oxidase, with downstream effects on ATP production, nitric oxide, and inflammatory signaling (Hamblin, 2017). Which means every claim you read is really a claim about a dose — and a dose has exactly two inputs.

Variable 1 — wavelength (what the light can reach)

Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths and are studied for different endpoints. Red at roughly 630–670nm is the band with the deepest dermatology literature; near-infrared at roughly 810–1060nm penetrates further and dominates the muscle and joint work — the exercise meta-analyses pooled trials across a 655–950nm range (Vanin et al., 2018). A one- or two-wavelength panel isn't defective; it's targeting a narrower slice of that literature.

Variable 2 — irradiance at a stated distance (how much arrives)

Irradiance is power density in mW/cm², and it falls off sharply with distance — which is why a single headline number is close to meaningless. 100 mW/cm² measured with a meter pressed against the LEDs is not the same product as 100 at a seated distance. Peak publishes three figures for the same panel — 175 mW/cm² at 6", 107 at 12", 80 at 24" — because that's the only form of the number you can plan a session around. How Strong Is the Evidence, Benefit by Benefit?

Here is the whole category, sorted by how much you should trust it. The labels are ours, and they describe study design and volume — not how good the marketing sounds.

Skin — the strongest case

Wunsch and Matuschka randomized 136 volunteers, treating 113 twice a week for 30 sessions with either red-only (611–650nm) or broadband (570–850nm) light against untreated controls. Treated subjects showed significantly improved skin roughness on computerized profilometry, higher intradermal collagen density on ultrasound, and better outcomes on blinded evaluation of clinical photographs (2014). Notably, broadband showed no advantage over red-only — a result the "more wavelengths is automatically better" pitch tends to leave out.

An earlier split-face randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded study treated 76 patients with 830nm, 633nm, both, or sham light twice weekly for four weeks, reporting wrinkle reductions up to 36% and elasticity increases up to 19% versus baseline, with histology showing increased collagen and elastic fibers (Lee et al., 2007); dermatology reviews of red and near-infrared light point the same direction (Avci et al., 2013). Muscle recovery and performance — moderate, and the timing matters

A systematic review with meta-analysis kept 13 randomized trials of acceptable methodological quality: time until exhaustion increased by 4.12 seconds versus placebo (95% CI 1.21–7.02) and repetitions by 5.47 (95% CI 2.35–8.59), with the most consistent results from red or infrared wavelengths applied before exercise at 50–200 mW and 5–6 J per point (Leal-Junior et al., 2015). A larger follow-up covering 39 trials and 861 participants found effects favoring phototherapy across exhaustion time, repetitions, isometric peak torque and blood lactate — while grading the evidence very low to moderate quality and calling for better-powered trials (Vanin et al., 2018). The honest summary: something real, measured in seconds and repetitions, not a transformation.

Inflammation — strong mechanism, thinner clinical file

Hamblin's review is the standard reference: photon absorption by cytochrome c oxidase and calcium ion channels, then increased ATP, a brief burst of reactive oxygen species, increased nitric oxide, and activation of transcription factors — with reduced inflammation described as one of PBM's most reproducible effects across joints, traumatic injury, lung and brain models (2017). A serious body of work — and largely cellular and animal work. Anyone quoting a percentage drop in a specific inflammatory marker from sitting in a sauna is extrapolating well past it.

What's Overhyped?

Four claims we'd retire from the category, our own industry's copy included.

  • "Medical grade." No such regulatory tier exists for a consumer sauna light panel. The meaningful questions — wavelengths, irradiance at distance, coverage area — are all checkable numbers.
  • Uncited percentages. "45% less soreness," "30% less inflammation." Where a real number exists it looks like 4.12 extra seconds to exhaustion, with a confidence interval attached. Dramatic round numbers usually trace to a marketing deck, not a paper.
  • Fat loss and "detox" from a cabin panel. Body-contouring trials exist, and a 2021 clinical review rates that evidence relatively favorably — while flagging small cohorts, methodological flaws and industry funding, and noting it's unclear whether LED sources match the laser systems used in most trials (Glass, 2021). Those were dedicated devices at prescribed doses, not a wall panel you sit near.
  • "Synergy" between heat and light. Reasonable hypothesis — heat raises skin blood flow — but no controlled trial has tested the combination against either alone. The defensible version: the light costs no extra time in a session you're already doing.

What Does the Sauna Half Contribute?

The heat and the light are separate literatures. The heat side's headline data comes from Finnish prospective cohorts: among 2,315 middle-aged men followed roughly 21 years, more frequent sauna bathing was associated with lower risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality — largest at 4–7 sessions weekly versus once (Laukkanen et al., 2015), with the same cohort showing an inverse association with dementia and Alzheimer's diagnoses (2017).

Two caveats marketing routinely drops: those are observational studies — association, not causation — and the exposure was traditional Finnish sauna, not infrared. A systematic review of 40 dry-sauna studies covering 3,855 participants found most reported beneficial effects, but only 13 were randomized controlled trials and most were small (n < 40), concluding better data is still needed (Hussain & Cohen, 2018). How Should You Actually Run a Session?

Numbers, not vibes — starting points to adjust from. The trials above used clinical devices at prescribed doses, so treat a home protocol as reasonable practice, not replication of a study.

  • Weeks 1–3: 10–15 minutes at 110–120°F, 18–24" from the panel, 2–3 sessions weekly on non-consecutive days.
  • Standard session: 20–30 minutes at 120–140°F, 12–18" away (~107 mW/cm² at 12" on Peak's panel), 3–4 sessions weekly. Face the panel for the first half, turn for the second.
  • Training weeks: 4–5 sessions. Since the performance trials applied light before exercise, a light-forward morning session and a heat-forward evening one matches the data best.
  • Skin focus: 20 minutes at 120–130°F at 12", 3–5 times weekly on clean bare skin — the trials ran twice weekly for 4 to 15 weeks before measuring.
  • Never: parked 6" from the panel for 40 minutes — the biphasic-response trap (Huang et al., 2009). The closest position is a short targeted option, not a default seat.

Basics that matter more than they sound: drink 16–20 oz of water in the half hour before, remove makeup and sunscreen (anything opaque sits between you and the light), don't stare into the LEDs, and get out immediately if you feel dizzy or nauseated.
