An infrared sauna is a heat-therapy device: emitters warm your body directly rather than heating the air first, raising skin and core temperature and triggering the responses of deliberate heat exposure — elevated heart rate, vasodilation, heavy sweating.
A red light therapy bed is a photobiomodulation device: hundreds to thousands of LEDs deliver specific red and near-infrared wavelengths at intensities intended to be absorbed by tissue, with essentially no heating effect. In the standard review of the field, Harvard photomedicine researcher Michael Hamblin describes the leading mechanism as red and near-infrared photons absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, influencing cellular energy production and signaling (Hamblin, 2017).
The evidence bases are separate too. The Finnish KIHD cohort of 2,315 men found more frequent sauna bathing associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality over roughly 20 years (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015) — that is heat's evidence, observational, on traditional sauna, and it says nothing about light. A bed is a light-delivery machine and nothing else: its LEDs wrap the body, so front, back and sides receive photons in the same ten minutes.
