PTSD & Trauma: What Light Research Is Showing

PTSD involves a stress system that stays switched on: the fear response fires in safe situations, and the brain struggles to tell danger from safety. Many people use a warm, quiet sauna session as a daily wind-down ritual, a set time to slow down, breathe, and let the body settle.

The research on light is earlier-stage but striking. In the 2021 Molecular Psychiatry study, rats given transcranial photobiomodulation (red/near-infrared light aimed at the head) right after a frightening event kept an accurate memory of where the danger happened, and in a model of repeated trauma they did not develop PTSD-like symptoms. This was an animal study using a targeted light device, not a sauna, and human trials are still needed. It is one reason researchers see light therapy as an area worth watching.

Menopause & Pelvic Health: Red Light Research Without Hormones

Participants in the 2026 PLOS ONE study received eight weekly 30-minute sessions of 660nm red light. Their Vaginal Health Index scores improved at every follow-up, every participant reached the non-atrophic range three months after treatment ended, and urinary symptom scores also improved. No adverse events were reported.

Important context: the light in this study was delivered internally by a small medical light guide, not by a sauna panel, and there was no control group. What it adds is evidence that red light in the 660nm range can change tissue in a measurable way, without hormones. If you are managing menopause symptoms, talk with your doctor about which options fit you.

Depression & Heat: A Surprising Clinical Trial

The study enrolled adults with major depressive disorder who were not taking psychiatric medication. Half received one session of whole-body hyperthermia, which raised their core body temperature; the other half received a sham session that copied everything except the intense heat. Compared with sham, the heat group had significantly lower depression scores at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6.

One explanation researchers propose is that warmth-sensing pathways in the skin signal brain areas involved in mood. A sauna session warms the body more gently than the device used in the trial, and this study does not show that a sauna has the same effect. It is an early but well-designed result in a growing field. Depression is a serious condition, so keep working with your care team.

Fibromyalgia: Infrared Heat in a Sham-Controlled Trial

The trial enrolled 41 adults with diagnosed fibromyalgia. The treatment group had six sessions of water-filtered infrared-A whole-body heat over three weeks, reaching an average peak body temperature of about 38.7°C (101.7°F) for roughly 15 minutes. The sham group had the same procedure with an insulating foil that blocked most of the infrared. Pain was significantly lower in the heat group at week 4 and again at week 30.

The study used a medical infrared hyperthermia device, which heats the body more than a typical sauna session. It was small, but sham-controlled results like this are rare in fibromyalgia research, which is why infrared heat is getting a closer look. If you live with fibromyalgia, ask your doctor how heat could fit your plan.

Concussion & Brain Injury: Early Light Therapy Research

Seven years after a car accident, the first patient could focus on computer work for about 20 minutes. After eight weekly light treatments, that grew to about three hours, and she kept up nightly home treatments for years; when she stopped for more than two weeks, her symptoms returned. The second patient, on medical disability after repeated head trauma, returned to full-time work after four months of nightly treatments.

Two case reports are the earliest stage of evidence: there was no control group, and the light (633nm red and 870nm near-infrared) came from LED clusters placed on the scalp, not from a sauna panel. Larger studies have since continued to explore light therapy for brain injury. For now, it is an area to watch rather than a proven treatment.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: What Light Therapy Studies Report

The review, in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, pooled six human studies published between 2010 and 2025. Across them, light therapy was associated with fewer thyroid autoantibodies, better thyroid hormone measures, and lower levothyroxine dose needs. One sham-controlled trial found better oxidative-stress markers and quality of life, without short-term hormone changes.

The authors are clear about the limits: few studies, different protocols, and frequent use of selenium or vitamin D at the same time, so larger randomized trials are needed. The light in these studies was applied directly over the thyroid, which is different from a full-body sauna panel. Never change thyroid medication without your doctor.

Skin: Measurable Collagen Gains From Full-Body Red Light

Participants had 30 sessions of either red light (611–650nm) or a broader red-to-near-infrared spectrum (570–850nm). Blinded reviewers rating before-and-after photos confirmed significant improvement in the treated groups compared with controls, and ultrasound showed higher collagen density in the skin. The broader spectrum did no better than red light alone, and no safety problems were reported.

Unlike many light-therapy studies, this one used large-area, full-body light sources, the same idea as a full-body red light panel. Collagen keeps skin firm and declines with age, so a measurable increase is a meaningful result. As in the study, consistency matters: participants had two sessions a week for about 15 weeks.

Heart Failure & Blood Vessels: Sauna Research From Japan

Twenty patients with moderate heart failure sat in a 60°C (140°F) dry sauna for 15 minutes, then rested under a blanket for 30 minutes, every day for two weeks. Symptoms improved in 17 of the 20. Their arteries widened better in response to blood flow, and BNP, a blood marker of strain on the heart, dropped. A comparison group that rested in a normal-temperature room showed no change.

This approach, later known in Japan as Waon therapy, was done under medical supervision, and the study was small and not randomized. A 60°C setting is within the normal range of an infrared sauna. If you have heart failure or any heart condition, talk with your cardiologist before starting sauna sessions.

The Peak El Capitan is a luxury 4-person outdoor full spectrum infrared sauna built for year-round backyard use by families and groups. It reaches a true 170°F, includes a full-body medical-grade red light panel as standard, runs from the Smart Life Wi-Fi app and the Peak RLT app, and ships free in a protective crate with a 7-Year Warranty.

Why people actually buy our saunas: the long game.

Regular sauna use is one of the most-studied longevity habits in the world. Researchers followed 2,315 middle-aged men for 20 years and found that those who used a sauna 4–7 times a week had 40% lower all-cause mortality and 50% lower fatal cardiovascular disease than once-a-week users (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015); a follow-up reported a 65% lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease (Age and Ageing, 2017). The benefit tracked with frequency — which is the entire argument for owning a sauna instead of booking one. The El Capitan is built to make that frequency effortless: a four-person outdoor cabin built to run year-round.

El Capitan — The 4-person outdoor flagship.

The El Capitan is our outdoor flagship — a weatherproof four-person cabin with thirteen heating panels, two medical-grade red-light panels, full-spectrum infrared, and a true 170°F. The most complete sauna we build.

A true 170°F. Reaches a true 170°F — well beyond the 140°F ceiling of most infrared saunas — for a deeper, more satisfying sweat.

Run it from your phone. Preheat from anywhere; adjust temperature, lighting, and session length in the Smart Life Wi-Fi app (iOS & Android, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi). Red light sessions run from the Peak RLT app.

An atmosphere for the ritual. Two HiFi Bluetooth speakers, dual-level LED accent lighting, built-in chromotherapy, and a smart oxygen-ionization system that freshens the air during and after each session — plus a foot-reflexology heater for head-to-toe warmth.

Built to last. Our outdoor saunas are built with space-grade aluminum—the same high-strength, lightweight material used in aerospace applications—chosen for its exceptional durability and resistance to rust, corrosion, and extreme weather. Each panel is finished with an electroplated baked varnish coating, a multi-stage process that electrochemically bonds protective layers to the metal before sealing it with a high-temperature baked finish. This creates a sleek, UV-resistant, weatherproof exterior that won't warp, fade, or deteriorate over time, ensuring your sauna maintains its modern look and structural integrity for years to come.

Health benefits & the research Plus

What the research actually shows

Regular sauna bathing is one of the most-studied longevity habits in the world. The strongest evidence comes from a 20-year Finnish cohort study that followed 2,315 middle-aged men and compared those who bathed 4–7 times a week against once-a-week users.

  • Longevity. 40% lower all-cause mortality among the most frequent users (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015).
  • Cardiovascular. 50% lower fatal cardiovascular disease in the same group (same study); a later analysis also linked frequent sauna use to lower incidence of hypertension (American Journal of Hypertension, 2017).
  • Brain health. 65% lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia among the most frequent users (Age and Ageing, 2017).
  • Recovery and relaxation. Heat exposure raises circulation and is widely used for post-exercise recovery, muscle relaxation, and winding down at the end of a day.

Two things worth knowing about this research. It studied sauna bathing generally — largely traditional Finnish saunas — so it is evidence about the habit, not about any one brand. And the benefits tracked with frequency: 4–7 sessions a week, not the occasional visit. Consistency at that level is difficult to buy by the session, which is the practical case for owning one.

Peak saunas are wellness products, not medical devices, and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

How long is the power cord and where does it come out of the unit? Plus

The cord is approximately 9 feet long. Where it comes out of the unit specifically will depend on the model of choice. Please consult our sales team for specifics!

What is chromotherapy and what does it do? Plus

Chromotherapy, also known as color therapy, is a form of alternative therapy that uses colors to improve physical and mental well-being. The idea behind chromotherapy is that different colors have specific wavelengths and energy frequencies, which can influence a person’s mood, emotions, and even health when absorbed by the body. Each color is believed to have unique healing properties.

  • Red: Stimulates energy, vitality, and circulation.
  • Orange: Promotes creativity, enthusiasm, and emotional balance.
  • Yellow: Boosts mood, self-confidence, and concentration.
  • Green: Known for its calming and balancing effects, aiding in relaxation and stress relief.
  • Blue: Soothes anxiety, promotes calm, and helps with sleep disorders.
  • Indigo: Encourages deeper levels of relaxation and introspection.
  • Violet: Supports mental clarity and spiritual awareness.
What is red light therapy and what is it good for? Plus

Red light therapy uses low wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular repair, boost collagen production, and reduce inflammation. It’s commonly used for improving skin health (anti-aging, wrinkles), speeding up muscle recovery, relieving pain, and enhancing circulation. It’s also beneficial for wound healing, hair growth, and even improving sleep and mood by supporting cellular energy production and reducing stress on the body.

What is the difference between medical-grade and non-medical grade red light therapy? Plus

When it comes to red light therapy, not all saunas are created equal. Many competitors advertise “red light therapy” but use non-medical grade lights that offer little to no real health benefits—often serving more as decorative lighting than functional therapy.

With Peak Saunas, you’re getting true medical-grade red light therapy—the same standard used in clinical treatments for pain relief, skin health, and inflammation reduction.

When you invest in a sauna for your health, don’t settle for decorative red lights that don’t work. Choose Peak Saunas with medical-grade red light therapy for clinically backed results—so you can recover faster, feel stronger, and truly optimize your wellness.

Can you assemble my sauna for me? Plus

If you prefer not to assemble it yourself, we recommend hiring a local handyman. Thanks to the simplicity of our sauna kits, any handyman team can easily complete the setup with no prior experience required.

How often should I use my sauna? Plus

The research points to frequency. In the 20-year Finnish cohort study, the people who saw the largest differences used a sauna 4–7 times a week; those benefits shrank at 2–3 times and largely disappeared at once a week (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). Most Peak owners settle into a 20–40 minute session most days. That cadence is the entire reason owning a sauna beats booking one — it removes the drive, the schedule, and the per-session cost that quietly cap how often you actually go.

Is there real research behind sauna use, or is it just marketing? Plus

There is a genuine body of peer-reviewed research, and it is worth being precise about what it says. The most-cited work followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for two decades and found that frequent sauna bathers (4–7x/week) had 40% lower all-cause mortality and 50% lower fatal cardiovascular disease than once-a-week bathers (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015), with a follow-up reporting a 65% lower rate of Alzheimer’s and dementia (Age and Ageing, 2017). Those studies looked at sauna bathing as a habit — mostly traditional Finnish saunas — not at any particular brand or at infrared specifically. We think the honest version is more useful than the hyped one: the habit is well studied, and our job is to make the habit easy to keep.

How long until I feel a difference? Plus

Most people notice the short-term effects — deep relaxation, looser muscles, easier sleep that night — within the first few sessions. The longevity research above is about something different: a habit sustained over years, measured across decades. Both matter, and they are not the same claim. Start with sessions you enjoy enough to repeat, and the frequency takes care of itself.
