The Science Behind Peak Saunas

We Rejected 73% of Heaters in Testing.
Here's What Made the Cut.

7 questions to ask any sauna company — and the test results most brands hope you never see.

Most infrared saunas with "red light therapy" hide small LED strips behind the heater panels. It saves the manufacturer money. It looks impressive in photos.

But it creates a problem no one talks about.

Red light therapy requires specific wavelengths (630-670nm for skin, 810-850nm for deep tissue) delivered at therapeutic intensity — typically 50-100 mW/cm² at the skin's surface. When you place LEDs behind a heater panel, two things happen:

  • The intensity drops by 60-80% as light passes through the heater material
  • The coverage becomes uneven — concentrated in small spots rather than distributed across your body

You get the marketing claim of "red light therapy" without the therapeutic dose that clinical studies require.

Our Solution: Dedicated Full-Body Red Light Panels

Every Peak Sauna includes dedicated red light therapy panels — separate from the infrared heaters. Here's what that means:

  • 144 medical-grade LEDs per panel (not 12-24 like integrated systems)
  • Dual wavelength output: 660nm + 850nm — the two most clinically studied frequencies
  • Measured intensity: 85 mW/cm² at 6 inches — within the therapeutic range used in published research
  • Full-body coverage: Panels positioned at face, torso, and leg height

You can use infrared heat alone, red light alone, or both together. Independent controls give you clinical flexibility that integrated systems cannot provide.

Why We Use Canadian Western Red Cedar
(The Premium Choice Most Competitors Skip)

Walk into any high-end spa or luxury hotel sauna. What do you smell? Cedar. There's a reason it's been the gold standard for centuries.

Most sauna companies — including Sunlighten and Clearlight — use Basswood. It's cheaper, lighter, and easier to work with. But it's not better.

We chose Canadian Western Red Cedar for three reasons:

  1. Natural rot and moisture resistance — Cedar contains natural oils that repel moisture and prevent decay. In a sauna that heats and cools daily, this matters. Basswood requires chemical treatments to achieve the same protection.
  2. Superior heat retention — Cedar's cellular structure holds heat more evenly than softer woods. Your sauna reaches temperature faster and maintains it more consistently.
  3. The aromatherapy bonus — That distinctive cedar scent isn't just pleasant — it's naturally antimicrobial. Every session releases subtle aromatic compounds that enhance the experience.

Yes, cedar costs more. That's why budget brands don't use it. But when you're investing in a sauna you'll use for 15-20 years, the wood quality determines whether it still looks and performs like new in year ten.

The 72-Hour Test Every Sauna Passes Before Shipping

After assembly, every Peak Sauna runs for 72 continuous hours in our testing facility. Here's what we check:

Hours 0-8: Initial Heat-Up

All heater zones must reach target temperature within 15 minutes. Red light panels tested for full LED function.

Hours 8-24: Sustained Operation

Maximum temperature testing. Thermal imaging identifies any hot spots or uneven heating patterns.

Hours 24-48: Cycling Test

4 hours on, 2 hours off, repeated. Simulates years of daily use. Joint integrity inspected after each cycle.

Hours 48-72: Final Inspection

Quality verification. Bluetooth, speakers, and control panel testing. Cleaning and packaging.

Our rejection rate: 4.2% of units require repair or component replacement before passing. We find problems here — not in your home.

Some companies advertise "zero quality" saunas. This is physically impossible — any wire carrying current produces a magnetic field. What they mean is "quality" at the seating position, which is exactly what we deliver.

We include quality test results with every sauna. You don't have to trust our claims — you can measure it yourself.

What "Full-Spectrum Infrared" Actually Means

Infrared light exists on a spectrum, measured in wavelength (microns). Different wavelengths penetrate tissue to different depths:

Near-infrared (0.7-1.4 microns): Penetrates deepest — up to 5mm into tissue. Associated with cellular energy production and wound healing in research. We deliver this through dedicated red light panels.

Mid-infrared (1.4-3.0 microns): Penetrates 2-3mm. Creates the sensation of heat penetrating into muscle tissue. Useful for joint stiffness and muscle recovery.

Far-infrared (3.0-100 microns): Absorbed primarily by the skin's surface. Creates the deep, radiant warmth most people associate with infrared saunas. Promotes sweating at lower air temperatures.

Our heaters produce mid and far-infrared. Our dedicated red light panels produce near-infrared and visible red light. Combined, you get true full-spectrum therapy — not just far-infrared labeled as "full spectrum."

The 30-Day Home Trial

A sauna is a significant investment. You should use it in your home, on your schedule, before committing.

Our terms:

  • 30 days from delivery. Use the sauna daily. Try different temperatures, session lengths, and combinations of infrared and red light.
  • 30-day trial. Try it in your home. If it's not for you, you can return it.
  • 10,000+ delivered, zero returns. People love these saunas.

In 10,000+ saunas delivered, they've had zero returns.

The Limited Lifetime Warranty

"Limited lifetime" has a specific meaning. Here's exactly what we cover:

  • Lifetime on wood structure: Warping, cracking, or joint failure — covered for as long as you own the sauna.
  • Lifetime on heaters: Element failure or degraded output — covered for as long as you own the sauna.
  • 5 years on electrical components: Control panel, wiring, LED panels, Bluetooth system.
  • 3 years on cosmetic elements: Interior lighting, exterior finish, hardware.

We don't prorate coverage or charge labor fees during the warranty period. If a heater fails in year 7, we ship a replacement and send a technician if needed — no cost to you.

Installation: DIY-Friendly Design

Every order includes free PeakGuard Crate Shipping. Here's the process:

If you need electrical work (new outlet, dedicated circuit), we can recommend licensed electricians in your area. We don't upsell electrical services — just referrals.

From Our Customers

"I tested it myself when it arrived. Everything was exactly as described. After 6 months of daily use, the joints are still tight and the heaters reach temperature in about 12 minutes."

— Robert M., Phoenix, AZ (Everest 2-Person, purchased March 2024)

"The separate red light panels were the deciding factor. I was using a standalone red light device before, spending $400+ for a panel that covered my face. Now I get full-body coverage integrated into my sauna routine. The math made sense."

— Catherine L., Seattle, WA (Denali 3-Person, purchased January 2024)

"I've had mine for 14 months. Use it 4-5 times per week. Had one issue — the Bluetooth connection was intermittent. They shipped a new control module overnight and walked me through the swap on a video call. Took 15 minutes."

— David K., Austin, TX (Shasta 1-Person, purchased December 2023)

How to Compare Saunas (Questions to Ask Any Company)

Before you buy from us — or anyone — get specific answers:

  1. What's the red light panel configuration? Integrated into heaters, or dedicated panels? How many LEDs? What wavelengths? What's the measured intensity at 6 inches?
  2. What's the warranty — specifically? How many years on heaters vs. electrical vs. wood? Is labor included, or just parts?
  3. What's the return policy? How many days to try it?
  4. Where is the wood sourced? What species? How is it prepared to prevent warping?
  5. What testing happens before shipping? Get specific: how many hours? What's checked?

We answer these questions transparently because we want informed customers. An informed customer who chooses a competitor is better than a confused customer who has buyer's remorse.
