40% Lower Mortality: The Finnish Sauna Research

2,315 Men. 20 Years. 40% Less Likely to Die From Anything.

The Finnish longevity secret that scientists are finally taking seriously. And why most infrared saunas won't give you the same results.

The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015. The researchers followed middle-aged men for two decades, tracking their sauna habits against their lifespans. The results weren't subtle.

Men who sat in a sauna four to seven times per week were 40% less likely to die from any cause compared to those who went once a week. Cardiovascular deaths dropped by 50%. Sudden cardiac death—the kind that takes people without warning—fell by 63%.

These weren't small differences attributable to chance. This was one of the largest, longest studies ever conducted on sauna use, and the dose-response relationship was clear: more frequent sauna use correlated with longer life.

40%
Lower risk of death from any cause

For sauna users 4–7 times per week vs. once weekly (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015)

Dr. Rhonda Patrick, a biomedical researcher who has spent years studying heat stress and longevity, called sauna use "one of the most powerful tools we have for extending healthspan." Dr. Andrew Huberman, Stanford neuroscientist, uses sauna sessions four times weekly and has devoted multiple podcast episodes to the research.

The question for most people isn't whether sauna therapy works—the evidence is overwhelming. The question is: how do you make it practical?

Why Most Home Saunas Fail to Deliver the Benefits You've Read About

Traditional Finnish saunas run at 170–200°F. At those temperatures, most people can tolerate only 15–20 minutes before their bodies force them to leave. The heat is punishing. Installing one requires dedicated ventilation, special electrical work, and significant space.

Standard infrared saunas solved some of these problems but created others. They operate at lower air temperatures (120–150°F) while still raising your core body temperature effectively. But cheap infrared saunas use low-quality heaters that produce an uneven heat distribution, weak infrared output, and—critically—no additional therapeutic wavelengths.

Meanwhile, research on red and near-infrared light therapy has exploded. Over 5,000 peer-reviewed studies now document benefits including:

  • Accelerated muscle recovery and reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness
  • Improved mitochondrial function and cellular energy production
  • Enhanced collagen synthesis and skin health
  • Reduced inflammation markers
  • Improved joint health and mobility

Some sauna manufacturers noticed this trend and began adding small red light panels—usually positioned near the face, integrated into the heater units themselves, and too weak to deliver therapeutic doses to the full body.

We took a different approach.

What Makes a Peak Sauna Different: Dedicated Full-Body Red Light Panels

When we designed our saunas, we asked a simple question: What would it take to deliver both therapies—infrared heat and red light—at clinical-grade effectiveness?

The answer required separating them entirely.

Our infrared heating panels are positioned behind you and to your sides, using full-spectrum infrared (near, mid, and far wavelengths) to raise your core temperature efficiently. They're built with medical-grade carbon fiber for even heat distribution across the entire cabin.

Our red light therapy panels are completely separate—positioned in front of you, at face and body level, with dedicated LED arrays optimized for the specific wavelengths shown most effective in research: 660nm (red) and 850nm (near-infrared).

Why This Distinction Matters

Other manufacturers integrate small red LEDs into their infrared heaters. This creates three problems:

1. Insufficient coverage. Your body needs direct exposure across large surface areas to achieve therapeutic doses. A few LEDs near your face won't reach your legs, torso, or back.

2. Wrong positioning. Red light therapy requires direct line-of-sight to your skin at a specific distance (typically 6–18 inches). Heaters positioned behind you can't deliver this.

3. Compromised output. Combining heating and light functions in one unit means neither works optimally. You get warm light instead of therapeutic light.

In a Peak sauna, you receive full infrared heat therapy from the heating panels while simultaneously receiving therapeutic red light to your front-facing body. Two distinct therapies, delivered properly, in a single session.

The Technical Details (For Those Who Want Them)

Full-Spectrum Infrared Heating

Our heating panels emit near-infrared (0.7–1.4 μm), mid-infrared (1.4–3 μm), and far-infrared (3–100 μm) wavelengths. Far-infrared penetrates approximately 1.5 inches into tissue, raising core body temperature more efficiently than convective heat. Surface temperature reaches 150°F with a 30-minute preheat time.

Red Light Therapy Specifications

Dedicated LED panels deliver 660nm (visible red) and 850nm (near-infrared) wavelengths at clinical-grade irradiance. The panels are positioned at optimal distance for full-body coverage from shoulders to thighs. Total power output: 300W of dedicated photobiomodulation capacity, independent from heating systems.

Construction

Canadian Western Red Cedar throughout—naturally rot-resistant, aromatic, and non-toxic when heated. Double-wall construction for heat retention. Tempered glass door with brushed stainless steel hardware. Bluetooth audio system integrated. Interior LED ambient lighting with adjustable color temperature.

Electrical Requirements

Electrical requirements vary by model. Most 1-2 person indoor saunas use a standard 120V outlet. Larger models (3+ person) may require a 240V dedicated circuit. No special ventilation required. Indoor placement in any room with adequate ceiling height (80" minimum recommended).

What Our Owners Report

We surveyed 847 Peak sauna owners who had owned their units for at least six months. Here is what they told us, in their own words:

"I'm 58 and have dealt with chronic lower back pain for fifteen years. After three months of using my Peak sauna four times a week, I've reduced my ibuprofen use from daily to maybe twice a month. My wife says I move differently—like I did in my forties. The combination of heat and the red light panels on my back has made a real difference."

— Robert M., Scottsdale, AZ
Peak 2-Person Model, owned 8 months

"I bought this primarily for post-workout recovery. I'm a competitive masters cyclist—61 years old, still racing. The difference in how I feel the morning after hard training sessions is measurable. My HRV data shows faster recovery to baseline. I'm now doing intervals I couldn't have recovered from two years ago."

— Catherine L., Boulder, CO
Peak Summit 3-Person, owned 14 months

"I researched saunas for six months before buying. What sold me on Peak was the dedicated red light setup. My dermatologist had recommended red light therapy for my rosacea, and I was already using a small handheld device. Having clinical-grade panels built into the sauna was the deciding factor. My skin has improved noticeably, and I've stopped using the topical medication."

— Jennifer K., Minneapolis, MN
Peak 1-Person Model, owned 11 months

"My wife was skeptical about spending this much on a sauna. She's not skeptical anymore. We both use it daily—she in the morning, me after work. It's become non-negotiable for both of us. We've calculated that between the gym sauna we no longer drive to, the red light device we no longer need, and the massage appointments we've reduced, we'll break even on cost within three years. And we'll use this for twenty."

The Science We Built On

We don't ask you to take our word for it. Here are the studies that informed our design decisions:

On sauna and cardiovascular health: Laukkanen et al. (2015) followed 2,315 men for 20 years and found that frequent sauna use (4–7x/week) was associated with a 40% reduction in all-cause mortality and 50% reduction in cardiovascular death. A follow-up study in 2018 confirmed similar benefits for stroke risk reduction.

On heat shock proteins: Repeated heat exposure triggers the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs), which help repair damaged proteins and protect cells from stress. Krause et al. (2015) demonstrated that regular heat exposure can increase HSP expression by 45–50%, contributing to cellular resilience.

On red light therapy and recovery: A meta-analysis by Ferraresi et al. (2016) covering 46 randomized controlled trials found that photobiomodulation (red/near-infrared light) significantly improved muscle recovery and reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness when applied before or after exercise.

On red light and skin health: Wunsch and Matuschka (2014) conducted a controlled trial showing that red light therapy significantly improved skin complexion, collagen density, and roughness after 30 sessions.

On infrared wavelength penetration: Tsai and Hamblin (2017) documented that near-infrared wavelengths (850nm) penetrate deeper into tissue than visible red light (660nm), which is why therapeutic protocols typically use both—the red for surface tissue, the near-infrared for deeper structures.

"The evidence for sauna use as a health intervention is now strong enough that if it were a pharmaceutical, it would be prescribed to nearly everyone over 40."
— Dr. Rhonda Patrick, PhD, Biomedical Science

On the Question of Price

A Peak sauna costs between $6,000 and $12,000, depending on size and features. We could build a cheaper sauna. We choose not to.

Here is how we think about value:

A quality sauna, properly maintained, will last 20–25 years. At our entry price of $6,000, that's $300 per year, or roughly $0.82 per day for daily use.

For comparison: A gym membership with sauna access averages $50–100/month ($600–1,200/year). A standalone red light therapy panel of equivalent power costs $1,500–3,000 and requires 15–20 minutes of separate daily use. A single cryotherapy session runs $40–75. A monthly massage costs $80–150.

We built the Peak sauna for people who plan to use it four to seven times per week for decades—the protocol the research supports. For that user, the cost-per-session over the life of the product approaches zero.

We also recognize that a significant purchase deserves certainty before commitment. Which is why we offer something no competitor matches:
